Burkard, Meyer et cetera
Editorial
On the ABB area in Baden, which today is only partially used industrially, a new vocational training centre composed of several larger buildings is coming into existence. Burkard, Meyer. have erected two new buildings and refurbished a third one, the former welfare building, which has also been adapted to its new utilisation. The structures are distributed across the area and adapt to it - the sports building is even a part of the topography; half dug down, it appears to be a spacious retaining wall. In spite of this the interventions are not limited to an invisible completing of the existing structure. They clearly set themselves aside from it, they attract attention, wish to be perceived. Combined with the chimneys of the turbine testing facility on the opposite, the school building in Bruggerstrasse, for instance, forms a new gateway to the town of Baden. In the ramp, which is positioned ahead as an individual structure leading to the main entry, the bus stop is integrated. This, too, makes the importance of the new institution evident. In addition, the former welfare house by Armin Meili, handed over to the work force in 1954 and visible from afar, constitutes the crowning conclusion of the area. To fall into line and yet attract attention: that is an eminent characteristic of the vocational training centre – and the common trait of the buildings presented in this issue of et cetera. With regard to other properties they could hardly be any more different: the featured buildings in Baden, the bus terminal in Baden-Rütihof by Knapkiewicz & Fickert, the two residential houses in Zurich by Peter Märkli respectively by huggen_berger architects and the Mercedes Benz Museum in Stuttgart by UN-studio. The variety of contemporary architecture has been a known fact for long; Since years now, the question posed by Heinrich Hübsch in 1828 - „in which style should we build“ - is answered in a new and always different manner by every architect. A consequence of this progressing individuation process is the atomisation of the urban structure, in which the buildings court the attention of viewers, each in its individual language. In the process, the ensemble effect is often lost. With regard to this aspect, the buildings presented in this issue adapt themselves, sometimes even „repairing“ the urban tissue, although they remain independent in their architectural expression. The friction within the context thus created beyond doubt promotes the atmospheric density of the location. The bandwidth of such intervention options is large – this, too, is demonstrated in this issue. In the case of the two residential buildings, the storeys build up towards the street, reinforcing the presence of the relatively small volumes. The bus terminal with its colourful inner life impresses through a striking wing construction, and the Mercedes-Benz-Museum, which is positioned as close to the motorway as possible, is there for all to be seen on its one-storey pedestal, in order for it to develop its effect optimally when seen from the car.
