Ausbildung als Fotograf an der Graphischen Bundeslehr- und Versuchsanstalt in Wien. Seit 1978 freier Fotograf mit dem Schwerpunkt auf Architekturfotografie.

Zuerst Zusammenarbeit mit Haus-Rucker Co und dann für Jahrzehnten mit Coop Himmelb(l)au. Fotoarbeiten u.a. für Günther Domenig, Carl Pruscha, Hans Hollein, Snøhetta, Donald Judd, Kiki Smith, Vito Acconci, Chris Burden, Philip Johnson, Bruno Gironcoli, James Turrell, Jannis Kounellis, Franz West, Bernard Rudofsky, Karl Hikade, Rebecca Horn und mehr.

Außerdem realisierte Gerald Zugmann Fotoserien über Carlo Scarpa, R.M. Schindler, Louis I. Kahn, Frank Lloyd Wright, Adolf Loos und Walter Pichler.

Von 1998 bis 2001 lag sein Fokus auf dem Projekt „Crossing California - about the architecture and landscape of California“. 2008 begann er mit seiner Arbeit zu dem Projekt „A Garden in West Cork, Ireland“.

Bereits seit 1995 ist beschäftigt er sich mit der Architektur von Pflanzen und baut künstliche Landschaften (Twilight Project).

Als Vertreter der analogen Fotografie arbeitet Gerald Zugmann ausschließlich mit Film und großformatigen Kameras. Er entwickelt alle Silbergelatine-Prints selbst.

Lehrtätigkeit

Seit 1996 lehrt er Architekturfotografie am Institut für künstlerische Gestaltung an der Technischen Universität Wien.
