The 50th Anniversary Exhibition of the Museum of Finnish Architecture

Eero Saarinen: Shaping the Future is the first retrospective to explore the complete career of this remarkable architect. The exhibition has been opened at the Helsinki Kunsthalle and will close in the spring of 2010 at the Yale University Art Gallery. Following the showing in Helsinki, the exhibition will tour in Europe and in the United States. The following institutions have already committed to hosting the exhibition: The National Building Museum in Washington, DC; Cranbrook Art Museum in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum at the Washington University in St. Louis and the Skirball Cultural Center, Los Angeles. In addition, negotiations are currently underway with some European as well as some other American institutions.

Eero Saarinen: Shaping the Future is a comprehensive project exploring the work of one of the most prolific, unorthodox and controversial masters of 20th-century architecture. The exhibition and related catalogue are the first public unveiling of the complete archives of the architect’s office, the largest repository of Saarinen-related material in the world, which was donated to Yale University in 2002. Organized by lead curator Donald Albrecht, the exhibition examines the architect’s wide-ranging career from the 1930s through the early 1960s. Saarinen’s international array of buildings from the monumental St. Louis Gateway Arch to his TWA Terminal in New York and Washington’s Dulles International Airport Terminal will be featured, as well as his path-breaking designs for furniture and his master plans for civic centers and universities.

An international consortium of Finnish and American scholars and curators was assembled to bring different perspectives to Saarinen’s work and to identify connections between mid-century culture and that of today. The emphasis is the global relevance of Saarinen’s work. Focusing on the stylistic plurality of Saarinen’s output and the collaborative nature of his practice—themes that resonate with today’s design preoccupations—the exhibition, catalogue and documentary film present a timely and critical view of a formative era of American modernism that continues to shape contemporary culture. The catalogue, published by Yale University Press and including approximately 470 illustrations, will surely rank as the definitive Saarinen reader. A smaller exhibition catalogue has also been published. The publications are available at the museum bookshop.

The exhibition, Eero Saarinen: Shaping the Future is co-organized by the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York, the Museum of Finnish Architecture and the National Building Museum, with the support of Yale University School of Architecture.
